- 1 cup shortening, chilled

- 8 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples

Directions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.
- Roll out dough on a floured surface to fit a 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Place dough in the pan and trim the edges.
- In a separate bowl, combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread over dough in the pan. Dot with butter.
- Roll out remaining dough and place over apple mixture. Seal edges and cut slits in the top crust.
- Bake in preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.
