Apple Slab Pie

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening, chilled
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 8 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.
  3. Roll out dough on a floured surface to fit a 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Place dough in the pan and trim the edges.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread over dough in the pan. Dot with butter.
  5. Roll out remaining dough and place over apple mixture. Seal edges and cut slits in the top crust.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.

Tips:

  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious dessert.
  • You can use a mix of different apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • Make sure to slice the apples evenly to ensure even cooking.
